Millie’s Garden

Reetta Niemelä & Leena Lumme:

Millie’s Garden
(Miljan puutarha)

Millie works on the vegetable patch and
enjoys the summer in her grandfather’s garden.

Millie will soon be turning seven and starting school in
the fall.
But before that it’s time for summer, and she spends
it at Strawberry Cottage with her Grandfather, tending the
plants and the vegetable garden. Millie gets to invite her
best friend Jacob along – it’s his first time at a summer
cottage.
Grandpa is a real green-fingered gent, who shows
the children the right way to plant potatoes, to make a
flower-meadow, to pick herbs, and to recognise all the
flowers in the garden.

He also shows them which poisonous plants to
watch out for, the way to bind together a summer garland,
and how to build a scarecrow to keep the birds off the
berries and the vegetable patch.

Millie’s Garden offers pre-schoolers and young elementary
school pupils a wealth of useful information on the plants,
animals, and tools found in the yard and garden, neatly
wrapped in a warm and delightfully illustrated story. Two
seasonal offerings in the popular Millie series, Millie’s
Summer (Miljan kesä) and Millie’s Winter (Miljan talvi),
were short-listed for the 2002 Finlandia Junior Prize.
